The mysterious death of Kiyam Suresh
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: June 16 2011 -
Kiyam Suresh, alias Tomba, aged about 44 years old of Moirang Khoirangban Leikai in Bishnupur district was recently murdered in Laishok village in Tamenglong district.
Suresh was a daily wage earner involved in construction work. He had been engaged by a head mason to work in the construction of a village court near Laishok village.
The day after the construction team arrived at the construction site, the head mason left for home, he was followed by another labourer. The news then came that Suresh had been lynched to death by villagers.
The story offered was that Suresh had left, in the night, the makeshift camp where the labourers were lodged, and having lost his way, wandered around and encountered a village woman at a water hole. When be asked her for directions she screamed in fear and this brought about villagers who beat him to death.
On Tuesday, June 14 a police report stated that three persons, Kamang Gangmei Chandaupou (20), Gonmei Meichamlung (26) and Rhaomei Ashing (25) have been arrested related to the death of Suresh. Police have so far not disclosed how these three have been involved with the killing of Suresh.
However the speed in which these three people were apprehended by the police is praiseworthy. Suresh's family, one assumes, will soon know the facts behind his death.
It may be mentioned that the family of Suresh had categorically stated that Suresh would not leave in the night to ask for directions to his home. This had raised eyebrows and people had termed his death as suspicious.
The JAC formed against his death had refused to take back his dead body to carry out the last rites. At this point of time one can only make conjectures. But there are a few questions to be answered.
Why did the head mason and the other labourer leave their makeshift camp so hurriedly ? If there were good reasons, why was Suresh left behind ?
And another thing, why did Suresh choose to leave the camp at night, that is according to one version of the story. If this version is to be believed how likely is it that he could have met a single woman, all alone, in a water hole in the night ?
And if the tragic incident did not take place in the night then exactly what happened to Suresh, because there must have been eyewitnesses.
If the reality turns out that it may not be safe for valley based daily wage earners to work in other districts, apart from Imphal/W, Imphal/E, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts, the incident will take a whole new understanding.
It is best that the investigating authority explain what really happened to Kiyam Suresh.
