The Undying Evening
K. Radhakumar *
It's hot today.
The dryness of the air
Vibrating on the horizon –
There is nothing in view.
The evening is drawing out
And I'm a bit dry.
My garden needs watering;
All these flowering plants need
Light and water and air.
As I water the flowerbeds
I remember my dead parents,
Their concern and care
When I was crossing
The road of childhood.
What can I do
What can a son do for his dear parents?
I must try to lead a good life
In memory of my late parents.
The garden sees the sun setting
And it's windy now.
The plants are swaying in the wind
And my mind, suddenly wide awake,
Is also swaying to the music of the evening.
My mind is swaying, nay dancing
On a darkling stage
And I feel at one with nature.
I am pretty sure
My parents must have enjoyed
Such an evening
The mother of all evenings
As I am doing now –
They didn't miss much.
And they are not sorely missed.
