The Survivor
K. Radhakumar *
The sun is not shining here
At Imphal
The place where I was born.
In the last few years
The world has undergone a sea change!
Am I a changed man
Since I had the road accident?
How can I be happy here and now?
The cacophony of dial tones
Of the current wave of bombardment
In the Asian continent!
The establishment and the terrorist!
The innocent are caught in the crossfire;
Wave after wave of refugees
Knock down the border fencing to get in
And at long last for a hostile reception!
His father, mother, brother and sister
Have been all murdered;
He is the lone survivor
And is quite happy to follow the crowd.
Images appear on the screen before me,
There are figures standing in the shadows!
I am seeing things?
It is a moonless night
And is pitch black.
No owl hoots.
In this alien environment
My beloved my only security is cold and dead
And I am afraid to go in the dark.
The visage of the survivor!
There is no charm and character.
