The Singing Stones
K. Radhakumar *
The busts of my immediate ancestors
Father and mother
Grandfather and grandmother –
They do not simply rest
On stone pedestals
But breathe life.
When I look at them I see
The formlessness of life
The timelessness of life.
Thanks to the artist
Shri Mangi of Toupokpi!
My ancestors now live in my dreams
And another plane as well.
Man as an artificially created island
Appears as a dot
On the horizon of the sea of humanity
Finding its place in the cosmos –
A whirlwind romance in wonder
From no beginning to no end.
Citizens of the world!
We cannot deny
There is no evil in the world!
Murder, rape, ethnic cleansing
The new avatar of racism –
The list can be lengthened.
In war we fight against each other
But we are still united
By a sense of common humanity.
The great war is ended in peace
When the better self, the humanity of my enemy
Offers me a drink of water
From his canteen in the battlefield:
'Thy need is greater than mine.'
