With five dancers in tribal loincloths and army boots, Surjit Nongmeikapam’s Nerves turns the experience of life in Manipur into one of the most powerful contemporary choreographies to emerge from India. In 2014, a shorter version won the Prakriti Excellence in Contemporary Dance Awards (PECDA) competition; this hour-long performance has just premiered. The Wire fielded reactions from four viewers and critics – poet Arundhathi Subramaniam, dancer Poorna Swami, playwright Swar Thounaojam and our contributing editor Raghu Karnad.
