The Pale Guinea Pig
K. Radhakumar *
After a long, long endoscopy,
I am told,
My mother was given
Bitter-sweet medicines and painful injections.
First this test,
Then another
And then another.
That guinea pig of a mother!
My mother, seriously ill and hospitalized.
The patient cooperates
For she knows
No pain, no gain.
Even in her dizziness
My mother feels
The doctors wish her no ill.
The ills of the modern world!
Drug abuse, ethnic tensions
Climate change
Drying up of inner resources
Man becoming animals....
There is no cure for the malaise
And the tragedy is
No saviour will resurrect
And bring back a gem of a place.
Did my mother suffer from culture shock
After she was admitted to the hospital?
Will she suffer from it
When she rejoins the changed world?
