The Lotus-Eaters
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
The lake by the eatery
Oh yes, it is
In bloom, in bloom.
The man behind the counter
Under the weather today
Is having a tough time of it.
People come and go after having
A couple of bites of the burger or sandwich;
Some do come for a drink of water
Or soft drinks, and then ride in their cars.
'Yours is a nice place,
With sweet-smelling pink lotuses nearby,'
Says one as he takes
A Rs 50 note out of his purse.
'Here's a fifty note-
Please keep the change', adds he
And then goes out.
Another comes out and asks,
'What's the name of this lake
With white lotuses
That grow on the white surface?'
'You mean the lake by the eatery
With red, red lotuses,'
Answers the man behind the counter.
A person by the door
Apparently of unsound mind
Who overhears the chit-chat joins,
'But I haven't seen anything on the lake
Let alone lotuses.'
