The Green Lotus
K. Radhakumar *
The lake by the eatery
Oh yes, it is
In bloom, in bloom
The man behind the counter
Under the weather today
Well he is having a tough tie of it
People come and go
After having
A couple of bites of the burger or sandwich
Some do come for a drink of water
Or soft drinks and then ride in their cars
"Yours is nice place"
With sweet-smelling pink lotuses nearby.
Say one as he makes
A 50 rupee note out of his purse.
'Here's a fifty rupee note -
please keep the change, adds he
And then goes out
Another comes out and asks
'What the name of this lake
With white lotuses
That grow on the white surface
And bees buzzing all around?'
'You mean the lake by the eatry with red, red lotuses'
Answer the man behind the counter.
A person by the door
Apparently of unsound mind
Who overcars the chit-chat joins.
'But I haven't seen anything on the lake
Let alone lotuses.'
