The Evening Smiles Back
K. Radhakumar *
Don't bank on an afterlife.
Nor on the immortality of soul,
The Sermon of the Blessed One
In the battlefield of Kurukshetra.
Life is one-time activity;
A disinterested performance of duty
Without selfish desire.
Is there nothing to a full day?
BP tablet in the morning?
Bread, eggs and milk for breakfast?
Is there a language called official language
Spoken at home and beyond the office building?
Shall we define life
As breathing in of oxygen
And breathing out of carbon dioxide?
I have met
The heroine of the heartache
Of my youthful days.
She has mellowed, has mellowed
A great deal
Since the days of our romance.
There is a strange charm
In the hard facts of life
And she tells me
About the death of her husband
In a very matter-of-fact way.
Is there nothing to a full day?
There is.
There is.
One full day is a lovely story.
A new story.
The sun has set
And I am still feeling mellow.
I see stars shining in the sky
And like a star
I am basking in the warm afterglow
Of a full day.
A wonderful day
Of a wonderful life.
