The Blue Light at Night
K. Radhakumar *
Many summers ago
In my schooldays
I rejoiced in the coming of the summer vacation
And the holidays always turned out
To be an occasion.
Youth and love!
That was a difficult chapter
In my life's history.
In retrospect, I think I made wrong decisions.
But the past wrongs
Bring back good memories.
I turn my hand to writing
And I write about yesterday's tragedy.
The tragedy is nothing but a joke
Made at my own expense.
Yes, the tragedy turns out
To be a stream of amusing anecdotes
Of my brief life as a lover.
Mon vieux, my life's story
Does not read like a translation.
I got married at 34.
I am 50 years old now
And I am working as a sales clerk.
I drive to work at 50 mph.
After the day's work is done
I drive home at 70 mph.
I think I have a bit of a complex
About my lack of the drive to succeed in life.
I do not know
If I am out of touch with the real world
Or if I am living in a dreamworld.
I see a mass of people on the move.
Singly or in groups
Oblivious of the traffic in the streets
They pursue their quest –
A blue light at night
A flying goal
Just a will-o'-the-wisp
My book of life is strangely unputdownable
