The ADC blues
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: May 04 2015 -
The battle line for the Autonomous District Council polls has been drawn.
This has crystalised the isolation and unenviable position of the Congress which is being decimated throughout the country.
Though no public ban had been issued by the NSCN (IM) and the UNC on the Congress candidates, the state unit Congress president Gaikhangam had made an issue of it the other day.
He did not say whether the party shall steamroller these two groups in time with the help of the union government.
The UNC had protested its innocence and non-involvement saying that it is not for issuing diktats.
In the last ADC polls held after a gap of 20 years, the Congress candidates faced a ban from some circles.
The threat to the candidates, if it is there, cannot be taken lightly.
Even today the elected representatives face threats.
On July 12, 2014 an ADC member Ngalangzar Malue was assassinated.
On January 30, 2015 another member, Thangjamang Kipgen miraculously survived when he was attacked by a gunman in his residence.
Besides on August 1, 2011 five persons including two school girls were killed and 9 others wounded.
There had been a number of attempts to assassinate the ADC members even in their safe house in Imphal.
Perfunctory statements by the state Congress president cannot just wish away the looming threat.
It was shown that the Government cannot protect the ADC members.
As the home minister, he should make it clear to the candidates that the threat to their lives is a veritable reality and that the government cannot give them cast iron protection.
They should not be given false promise since it is a serious matter.
