Indeed a very rare event happened on the 18th of May, 2011.
The hill came down to the valley to witness the relation which is still cherish till now. To feel how strong our relation was and how important we are to one another.
A group of 65 people from different parts of Ukhrul district like Hundung, Grihang, Khamasom, Litan and Ukhrul district headquarters, came to Imphal, arranged by Works minister, K. Ranjit Singh to watch Lai-Haraoba festival at Wangoo Tampha Lairembi under Sugnu Assembly Constituency.
It is really heartbreaking to know that our brothers, Tangkhuls, have not really witness the importance of them in the most sacred and important festival of the Meiteis, Lai-Haraoba.
But the occasion of laying the foundation stone of a Guest House at Shirui in Ukhrul district on May 10, by Works Minister K Ranjit Singh turns out to the bridge which had been clouded for such a long time now.
On that day, while making a passing comment on the historical relationship between the two communities, he had mentioned how the Lai-Haraoba festival of the Meiteis could not be concluded without the presence of a Tangkhul Saba (a male actor playing the role of a Tangkhul).
The visit was arranged after many Tangkhuls expressed their desire to watch the Lai-Haraoba festival. The Tangkhuls and the Meiteis has had a very cordial and deep relation from time immemorial.
The Tangkhuls are said to be the elder brother of the Meiteis, and as K.Ranjit says, that there is a still the spot at Hundung in Ukhrul district from where the Tangkhuls, who are considered to be the elder brother of the Meiteis, looked at the valley to see the light put by the younger brother in the valley.
This is the real reason why the Meiteis celebrate Mera Wa Yungba. So much is the love between the two brothers that even now the Khulaakpa of Hundung A S Peter keeps the footprint of Meiteis Kings till now.
Everybody should appreciate the effort done by K. Ranjit and any other on trying to bring back the lost love between the two brothers. We are one and nothing should come between us.
We have forgotten our past, but it’s never too late to start again now, remembering who we are. Let this visit be another milestone on a stronger relation between the two brothers, the Tangkhuls and the Meiteis..
