TSE : 9 years in office
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: 11th September, 2008 -
The Sangai Express completes 9 years of publication today. It was on September 10, 1999 that The Sangai Express team went to work and managed to bring out its first issue on September 11, 1999 and since that day, we have been trying to live up to our profession as journalists, not only disseminating information to the public but also speaking out on issues which we think are important to the State.
We have completed 9 years and some may ask, 'So what ? What is the big deal ?' 'And what is there to say about the foundation day of a newspaper, no matter how widely circulated it is.'
There is nothing earth shattering or historical about the first day in which copies of The Sangai Express hit the news stand but this is a different matter and the more important point is that the foundation day is the opportune moment for us at The Sangai Express to look back at all these years and then chart out how we should step into the 10th year.
This is what is important to us and what is important to us will also have a direct bearing on the readers and subscribers. There have been changes in the last 9 years.
From a mono-coloured, four paged newspaper we have progressed to a multi-coloured eight paged newspaper today.
This may sound like a lark to some who are not well associated with the business of printing and publication and of course with the profession of journalism, but believe us the changes have come with efforts, labour encompassing both the physical and the mental, investment, not only in terms of money but in terms of utmost commitment to the work at hand, man management, spreading our network, corresponding with different agencies etc
.
All the strides, yes we think we can call it strides, that The Sangai Express has made in the last 9 years are due to many factors but the main factor is the co-operation of our readers, subscribers, well wishers and advertisers.
Well meaning suggestions even downright criticisms have been the motivating factors in trying to improve ourselves and despite this we will not hesitate to say that we had goofed up on a number of occasions, made silly mistakes while proof reading, came out with ghastly lay outs, published articles and letters to the Editors which did nothing except tarnish the image of some individuals, missed out important news reports-in fact all the things that can go wrong with a newspaper.
Our sincere apology to all those who we may have hurt unintentionally. Yet despite the goof ups, we have been able to swim ahead of many others and this we think is due to the fact that our readers at least acknowledge that we are sincere in our work.
No pretensions is our approach to our profession coupled with team spirit. The Editor is the first among equals and the phrase that we either swim or sink together is a lesson that has been imbibed by each one of us at The Sangai Express.
Each day is a lesson for we believe that there can be no one who can be said to have mastered the profession of journalism.
Lest we forget, we also acknowledge the immense contributions of our regular columnists who not only submit their weekly write ups but also come up with suggestions and criticisms too.
