Spare a thought for the young students : Bartering away the future
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: November 09 2015 -
This is the happening season, no doubt.
The Sangai Festival, the by election to two Assembly Constituencies in Thangmeiband AC and Thongju AC, the suspended UNC sponsored blockade, the days of tension at Churachandpur over the passing of the three Bills on August 31, all these and others have been hogging the limelight and with reasons.
However amid all the cacophony, has anyone ever given a thought to the state of education of the youngsters here ? Obviously not.
Remember schools in the valley areas were paralysed for days when the demand to restrict the inflow of outsiders was at its peak.
The focus soon shifted to the hill districts, particularly Churachandpur, after the passage of the three Bills in the State Assembly.
It was only after a good number of days were lost that the schools in the district re-opened but till today tension must be running high there.
Bandhs and blockades were lined up along the National Highways with the UNC leading the way.
The protest against the Bills also echoed at Delhi with the Manipur Tribals’ Forum leading the way.
All these instances are sure to leave an adverse impact on the mentality of the young students but no one seems to really care.
In short, while the adults are calling the shots it is the young students who stand to be affected the most.
True the bandhs in the hills may have been relaxed for school going children, but the disturbed ambience is sure to derail the concentration of the young students and the fruit of such a situation will surely be reaped by the people and the land in the years to come.
No wonder many parents and elders feel compelled to send their children outside the State to study.
The need is felt all that more after the children pass their Class XII examination.
Why is this so is a question that should have been raised a long time back.
Education is the greatest leveller and in this age it has become a must.
And education is no longer about earning just a degree but excelling for the level of competition is fierce.
This is where everyone, from the Government to the CSOs to the citizens, everyone need to pool in their thoughts and question whether the young students here can hope to compete with the others.
Remember the world today is a global village, and this means that the scope of competition too has widened.
The question is whether the adults of society are providing the right ambience for the youngsters to rise and shine.
Time for the Government to ask itself why college education is in such a state that thousands of students feel the need to go outside the State to pursue higher education.
The people too need to seriously ask themselves why the overall ambience is not deemed fit for the students that many of them have to go outside the State.
Unfortunate it is that no one seems to have given any thought to the future of the young students and what ought to be done to correct the flaws.
