Smaller states may make Indians less aware about one another

What percentage of Indians who read this post would have a KBC-finality that the economic blockade in Manipur is still continuing? It is very difficult to fathom a guess, but I am fairly certain it would not be near the fifty per cent mark. Can we then say that the majority of Indians are unaware – and thereby unconcerned – about the state of affairs in Manipur?
To be fair to people unless one goes about searching specifically, there is not much news regarding the blockade on a daily basis in either the mainstream print media or television. On Internet, search engines also do not feature stories about the blockade on their front page.
Reasons behind this are not difficult to find: there is no market-incentive for knowing, writing or showing about the northeast. Politically the entire region does not have ‘sizeable numbers’ to merit attention. After including Assam and Sikkim, the entire region has a combined strength of 25 in Lok Sabha – less than 5 per cent.
If this is the awareness level of people, is India prepared for a further breakdown of states? Not all Guju food is sweet and the craft of Kathiawad is significantly different from that of Kutch. Across states, political behavior is varied so if more and more states come up will Indians become even less aware of one another?
Before taking positions for immediate political gains, parties must examine whether further breakdown of states will add or subtract from the unity and awareness quotient of India.
