Skulls and skullduggery
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: April 18 2015 -
The recovery of some skulls and other human bones on two consecutive days by the construction labourers while scooping earth at the erstwhile school compound of Tombisana high school would have brought the sky crashing down had Manipur been a big and politically significant state.
There are instances galore of how mainland India looks down the people mostly because our elected representatives cannot make their presence felt.
That the skull scam would be swept under the doormat just to wish away some unpleasant dimensions was foreknown.
Because people fear that the skulls and skeletons must be of some of the missing persons.
The Supreme Court and the high court were of the view that some of the missing persons had met “unnatural deaths”.
Family members and human rights activists are of the rock firm opinion that the missing persons were victims of the extra-judicial executions.
Many skeletons will tumble out if a CBI inquiry is held since the camps of two security forces and one rapid strike force of the state had once their camps there.
This seems to be the major ground for refusing a CBI inquiry..
If no inquiry is held the nexus of some forces with the skull recovery can never be established and hue and cry from some sections will fizzle out sooner than later.
An inquiry by police with their limited powers, resources and experience in the field will not be of much help.
The unspoken message of the chief minister who made the momentous disclosure is that now that the CBI has declined it the civil societies should lift the ban on the construction works as the sanctioned fund may soon lapse.
The civilized society, intellectuals and human rights organisations should not remain silent simply because there is now a skullduggery to silence the people and protect the personnel who might have committed extra judicial killings.
The union home ministry should explain why it had declined to take up the sensational case and it very surprising that the Congress ministry here has been in deep slumber all these days.
The rule of law should prevail in Manipur and justice should not be denied to the people.
The guilty ones, no matter how high and powerful they are, should face the due process of law.
