Sketches and Notes of Summertime
K. Radhakumar *
(1)
It is summer;
I suffer from the afternoon heat
And try to quench my thirst
With a long drink of cold water.
Out of my room I come
And see the deadening effect of summer
On the plants in the flower pots.
Suddenly I get the feeling
The flowers are thirsty.
I am elated at watering the plants.
An act of kindness!
I try to appreciate the bond
Between man and nature
By feeling it.
I wonder
If a common man has moments of greatness.
(2)
I take a drink of water
But my thirst is not quenched.
I have everything –
A three-bedroom house
A family of four
Job security;
I am chauffeured to and from my office
And have adequate insurance cover.
But there is something in this world
And in this life
That gives me an aching void in my heart.
There are no words
To describe the predicament I am in
And the void left by this darkness is never filled.
I am struck with the feeling of
Homelessness in my own home,
Loneliness among the crowds.
The fact is
I find myself a foreigner
In my native city.
