Sit-in-Protest against killing of Richard Loitam and death of Dana Sangma at Shillong

Today, the 13th May 2012, the Shillong Manipuri Students' Union (SMSU), Shillong had successfully organized a Sit -in- Protest at Don Bosco Square, Laitumkhrah, Shillong from 11 a.m to 3 pm. To protest against the gruesome and inhuman killing of Richard Loitam, a student of Acharya Institute of Architecture, Bangalore on 18th April 2012 and the death of Dana Sangma, a student of Management in Amity University, Gurgaon, Haryana, on 24th April under mysterious circumstances.
There were mote than 500 people from various ethnic groups of North-East states to participate in the Sit-in-Protest. The protesters expressed their solidarity to the parents of the victims to fight for the justice. The participants of the Sit-in Protest displayed placards displaying, "We want Justice", "Justice delayed is justice denied", " Criminals deserve punishment not re-enforcement" etc. There was a signature campaign and more than one thousand people signed on the signature sheet.
The participants demanded as follows:
1. Speedy action for justice for Richard Loitam and Dana Sangma.
2. Legislation to stop racial profiling and discrimination to the NE students.
3. Mechanism for safety and security of NE students in other cities of India.
The following students' organizations apart from SMSU took part in the protest:
1. Naga Students' Union ,Shillong,
2. All Bodo Students' Union, Shillong,
3. Tripuri Students' Union, Shillong.
Memorandum submitted to:
1. The Prime Minister of India,
2. The Home Minister of India,
3. The Chief Ministers of Manipur and Meghalaya,
4. The Governors of Manipur and Meghalaya,
The protest was peaceful and very cordial.
