Separate time zone for NE ruled out

Despite an overwhelming support for a separate time zone for the North-east, the Centre has ruled out the possibility on the ground of modest saving of power. Minister of State of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region Dr Jitendra Singh said the Government is not planning to create a separate time zone for the NE states.
A scientific study, based on Regional Load Curves and several assumptions, carried out by the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru, has indicated a modest saving of power between 1.2 and 1.5 per cent of the total usage in the north eastern region, which is not very high, he concluded.
