NEISP SEMINAR SERIES 2010
Speaker: Prof. B.K. Roy-Burman
To be chaired by Prof. R.K. Jain
Topic : Cross – Currents and Paradoxes in N.E. India
Abstract
Part of N.E.I. is located on the lap of Himalayan ranges which are highly unstable and still rising, causing flood and seismicity. The region is the direct meeting point of South, South East and East Asia and indirectly with Central Asia. In ancient world long distance trade by land route used to take place through the region with institutional arrangements for the same. With emergence of marine trade in late medieval period, the direction was reversed with sociological implication paving the way for colonial infiltration.
However to balance mercantile capital on the one hand and strategic interest of empire building on the other a policy of indirect rule was adopted in some parts of N.E.I. and adjoining regions. Post colonial developments have been marked by demographic paradox and cataclysmic change, emergence of ethnic nationalism; cross-currents of concomitant issues and institutional arrangements.
