The Department of English of City University of Hong Kong has an outstanding international faculty with world-renowned scholars in the elds of applied linguistics, creative writing, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, world Englishes, and world literatures in English. Key areas of research in the Department include applied linguistics, Asian Englishes, Asian literature in English, corpus linguistics, diasporic literatures, discourse analysis, English in China, genre analysis, intercultural communication, language and law, language policy and planning, pragmatics, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, and world Englishes.
The current Head of Department is Professor Kingsley Bolton. The Department of English admits postgraduate students with research interests in fields
relevant to the Department's areas of expertise. The PhD programme focuses on a wide range of interdisciplinary theories and perspectives drawn from relevant domains in the
humanities, the social and behavioural sciences, and related professional fiel.
Many of our graduates have gone on to take up positions at college or university level. Others hold key positions in various private and governmental organisations, such as the Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government
Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme
The 'Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme' , established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of the HKSAR Government, aims at recruiting the best and brightest students globally to pursue their research degree programme in Hong Kong's institutions.
The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend, and conference and research-related travel allowance for three years of study. Fellowship recipients at CityU will also be awarded a PhD scholarship which covers students' tuition and on-campus hostel accommodation fees throughout three years of study.
Government, the Department of English at City University may also have other scholarships Master’s degree in English studies or a closely-related subject.
