Pastor of MBC Church felicitating a mother on May 10 2015 :: Pix - TSE
Give me a good mother and I will give you the world. Or something to this effect. This was Napoleon Bonaparte.
Comes close to the ultimate salute to mothers across the world but why only a ‘good mother’ ?
Aren’t all mothers the perfect embodiment of love, patience and forgiveness ?
Everyone seems to recognise the value or love of a mother but how many actually translate this sentiment into action ?
Or is it really needed ?
A mother will obviously not attach much importance on whether her children actually translate their respect and love for them into action for the love of a mother for her children is unconditional.
A quality which no one has. A quality which need not be explained in too many words, but there is the growing need for everyone to realise that the love for one’s mother should be able to generate something good for everyone.
Tough to say how one should actually show that they do care and love their mothers but it is the little things that matter ultimately.
No mother would expect her child to gift her anything expensive to demonstrate his or her love.
One need not be a topper to shine in front of his or her mother and obviously it is not the material things which can and will demonstrate one’s love for one’s mother.
As noted earlier it is the little things that count.
A demonstration of concern, love and care can go a long way in demonstrating children’s love for their mothers.
This is about mothers and while Manipur seems to have come around to the idea of the need to place premium on the virtue of motherhood, amply demonstrated by the existence of Ima Keithel, the meira paibi movement, the Nupi Lans etc it stands that whenever one talks about mothers, it should also include the position of women in society.
Makes no sense in placing all mothers on a pedestal while reducing women to punching bags, especially within the confine of one’s house.
Will do good for the place and the people if one recognises the fact that in respecting mothers, one is also saluting womanhood.
A look at the crimes and other excesses committed against women of the land will leave no one in doubt that the people still have a long way to go to really understand why a special day is kept aside as Mothers’ Day in a calendar year.
On hindsight why should the virtue of mothers be remembered on only a day ?
On the other hand some may argue that a special day needs to be set aside for mothers of the world.
Whatever it is, it would do good for everyone to acknowledge the fact that it is mothers who play the pivotal role in moulding the character of a child.
It is not for nothing why someone like Napoleon Bonaparte should feel it necessary to come out with such a profound observation, as has been mentioned at the opening of this commentary.
Not possible for anyone to repay the love and care of a mother but the least that one can do is to respect whatever mothers across the world have taught their children.
This should stand true at any time of the year and not only on Mothers’ Day.
The Sangai Express joins in saluting all mothers of the world.
