Rising crime against women
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: September 23, 2014 -
Every now and then, cases of crime and violence against women are reported in the media.
The recent gruesome murder of a woman vendor from Hiyangthang Palak Village has once again shocked the Manipuri society, which is known to have great respect for women.
It is even claimed that Manipur is a dowry-free state in the country. Most women feel that they are ‘safe’ here in the state even though armed conflict has claimed many lives during the last few decades.
Unfortunately, cyber crime against women is also on the rise in the state. The government agencies as well as civil society organizations of the state have been proactive in dealing with the issue of increasing crime and violence against women.
The situation of Manipur is not like that of UP or Delhi, but still crime and violence against women in the state is very alarming.
The police and other government agencies should perform their responsibility well to stop crimes against women in the state.
There have been instances of alleged negligence on the part of police while dealing with crimes against women.
The police should leave no stone unturned to nab the perpetrators, while the judiciary to give exemplary punishment to the culprits.
There have been landmark verdicts against the culprits in some high profile rape cases of u-morok trade and TG school student.
However, the most unfortunate part is the mob trial of persons accused of crimes against women.
People must always remember that there is something called law, and they should never try to take law into their hands.
Apart from the tasks of policing and legislation, the authorities concerned should try to sensitize the masses on gender issues. It should be the responsibility of all people to stop rising crime and violence against women in the state.
Besides rape, murder and assault of women, the government agencies and civil society organizations should also be vigilant towards cyber crimes against women in the state.
The advent of social networking sites and messaging apps has aggravated such issue in the state.
The recent case of uploading the video of elopement night of a girl by her ex-lover on Facebook is one of such myriad cyber crimes against women in the state.
Taking a look at this grim situation, women are no longer safe either in the real world or virtual world.
At this crucial juncture, the government agencies and civil society organizations must go hand-in-hand to tackle increasing crime and violence against women in the state and make Manipur a safe place for women.
Achieving such goal will require a herculean task ranging from strict legislation to imparting gender awareness to the general masses.
The media should also focus on such sensitive issues concerning safety and dignity of women in the state.
Historically, Manipur is a land of women bravehearts, and the brave women of the state should not be turned away simply by the acts of some mindless people.
Thus, it is high time for all to stand united to fight rising crime and violence against women in the state.
