- Rights groups call for immediate release of AFSPA Crusader Irom Sharmila; Pak parallel drawn on army's role
The Telegraph | Khelen Thokchom | Imphal, Nov. 2:
Rights organisations in Manipur today renewed their demand for the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act and immediate release of rights crusader Irom Sharmila from jail. The renewed demand for repealing the controversial act comes on a day Sharmila completed 15 years of her hunger strike, which was launched against the army act.
"We urge the Centre to release Sharmila immediately and also repeal the armed forces act. We also urge the Prime Minister to investigate all cases of extra-judicial executions, sexual violence cases and punish the guilty army personnel," Sobita Mangsatabam, the secretary of Women Action for Development, demanded.
