Rejoinder to the NSUM Press released on attempted rape case, dated 03/07/2012
Dear Sir/Ma'am
It’s very unfortunate to come across in different media of NSUM press releases about the attempted rape case. NSUM press release dated 3rd of July 2012 which was circulated in epao was biased and a direct attempt to tarnish the image of the victim as you had mentioned her name twice and not the names of the two accused. Thus, the victim became further victimised and stigmatised by your act of deliberate commission and omission.
The Poumai community of Mumbai stands up for the victim so that the honest story is told and known.
Secondly, during the NSUM’s meeting on the 23rd June at Tali Jamir’s resident, which was attended by the parties of the accused and victim, NSUM executive, Action Committee and Naga elders, the word “unwanted pregnancy” was never mention by any member. But, Mr President of NSUM has quoted in both your press releases that one of the accused stated about unwanted pregnancy. Where can we find your trustworthiness and sincerity with regard to this case?
Thirdly, Mr. President, the two accused were never “ordered to apologies” in the meeting for their crime. In fact, the victim and her guardians never wanted forced apology but sincere heartfelt apology from the part of the two culprits.
Fourthly, your press released stated that “the boys were ordered to pay her” and you failed to mention that the money was not accepted by the victim as she have forgiven them.
Fifthly, you expose the case with brutality, minutely detailing the statements of the victim and one of the accused. Thereby, the privacy of the victim and her right to live with dignity is scarified.
The members in the meeting on the 23rd June agreed upon that there shall be not any media circulation of the story. The President had gone against this resolution and bringing out the very bias story to public domain and debate. Where is the integrity and moral responsibility of the President?
The Poumai community of Mumbai therefore strongly disapprove you partial press releases which not only hurt the victim but our community as a whole. Therefore, the president and the secretary should resign from their posts respectively on moral ground.
Your's faithfully
M Tho
