Rebel threat halts films
The Telegragh | Khelen Thokchom | Imphal, Feb. 17
The Manipuri film industry shut down indefinitely today to protest against extortion threats by a militant group to the Film Forum Manipur. Screening of films at cinemas, shooting, editing, sale of DVDs and VCDs - everything has been suspended.
"We have decided to suspend all Manipuri film-related activities after the National Revolutionary Front Manipur issued threats to us for not meeting its monetary demand. We will not resume our activities until the threat is withdrawn," the chairman of the Forum, L. Surjakanta, said today. According to Surjakanta, the militant group first approached the Forum for "financial assistance" late last year. In response, the Forum suspended all film activities from November 14, 2015.
