Ratan Thiyam's Play "Shakudaba Shaknaiba" at Kolkata on August 17 2011
The Telegraph | Imphal, July 29
Fans of theatre icon Ratan Thiyam and lovers of Rabindranath Tagore’s works have a reason to rejoice as they will get a taste of both the geniuses in one package.
Thiyam’s Shakudaba Shaknaiba based on Tagore’s play Raja (The King of the Dark Chamber) will inaugurate this year’s Rabindra Utsav, which is being organised as a part of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of the bard from Bengal, on August 17 at Madhusudan Mancha auditorium in Calcutta.
Thiyam said Shakudaba Shaknaiba was a positive use of highest capacities to bridge the outer and inner worlds.
A former director of the National School of Drama, Thiyam professes deep concern for social welfare and spiritual yearnings in the midst of the political chaos in the modern world through his work.
Altogether five groups will perform in the theatre section of the festival, which will also include dance and music. Apart from Thiyam, the other directors taking part in the festival are Anuradha Kapur (New Delhi), Mahmood Farooqui (New Delhi), Saumya Joshi (Ahmedabad) and Kallol Bhattacharya (Bardhaman).
