Bom in 1957 at Uripok Achom Leikai, Imphal, Shri Ranjit Adhikarimayum is a renowned choreographer, composer and performer in the world of Manipuri Dance. Known for his versatile traits and scholarly approach, he is also one of the most respected personalities in the field.
Having completed a certificate and diploma course in Manipuri Dance from JNMDA, Imphal, Shri Ranjit Adhikari, as he is popularly known, also acquired a Diploma in Choreography from Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi, under the guidance of eminent choreographer Guru R.K. Singhajit Singh whom he considers as a great source of inspiration.
Besides, his 2-decade long association with other iconic figures of Manipuri culture including Guru Th. Tarunkumar, Prof. E. Nilakanta and G. Surchand Sharma has greatly influence his outlook and approach which is richly reflected in his works.
Even though his works are known for their creative experimentations with his penchant for choreographic liberty well reflected in them, yet his choreographies are deeply rooted in the traditions of Manipuri Dance.
So far he has directed and choreographed more than 18 dance dramas and several other classical solo dance items.
A widely toured artiste, he has participated in several major dance festivals and cultural events of national importance. Besides he has presented several seminar papers on different aspects of Manipuri Dance and has also published a book entitled Manipuri Jagoigee Wahoudok Ama
Presently serving as Principal, Government Dance College, Imphal, he is keenly taking up more research works in traditions of Manipuri dances.
For his eminence and in recognition of his profound contribution to Manipuri Dance, Shri Ranjit Adhikarimayum is honoured with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award.
