Rally to back Irom Sharmila's cause in fifty cities
Times of India | TNN Mar 3, 2012, 10.53PM IST
Over 80 civil bodies will hold a nationwide demonstration in fifty cities across the country on Tuesday to showing solidarity with Irom Sharmila Chanu's 11-year hunger strike against the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).
A common memorandum demanding repealing of the military act will be submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after the demonstration, which is an initiative of the Save Sharmia Solidarity Campaign (SSSC). Besides the nationwide anti-AFSPA campaign, SSSC is also organizing an interaction session with women parliamenatians of all political parties on March 16 and a national convention in support of Sharmila in New Delhi later.
Ten days ago, a symposium on Sharmila and AFSPA titled "11-year hunger strike: Irony in the world's largest democracy" was held at Harvard University's John F Kennedy School of Government. It resolved to form an initiative based at Harvard for future debate and discussion on issues pertaining to Manipur and the northeast region of India.
