Rajnath for force reduction, but not AFSPA repeal
Times of India | Prabin Kalita | TNN - Jul 12, 2015
Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday campaigned for reduction in deployment of security forces in the northeast to change the negative perspective of outsiders about the region. But at the same time, he ruled out repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act which gives sweeping powers to the Army to carry out counter-insurgency operations.
Later, talking to the media, Singh said, "There is no proposal before me for repealing the Act. As and when the situation normalizes in a state, AFSPA will be automatically lifted from that state."
