Rage against the Darkling Sky
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
By early evening
A green sun is about to sink
Below the horizon.
It may not be a sorry sight
For the poet or the philosopher.
Not for me.
This is early in the evening
The voyage of self-discovery,
The pleasure of learning
With his wife and children
The meaning of love and life
Has just begun, just begun.
I sigh at the thought
Some leaves fall
Before turning yellow.
Ah, how life defies logic!
He knows he is dying
But he does not want to die
(The principal cause of the tragedy of life!)
And he smiles a small smile
To cover it –
The tasteless joke!
He lies – he lies to me
And in lying to me
He lies to himself and to life.
But life cannot lie like the mirror.
Hail, death, men doomed to die salute thee.
The sun is dying a slow death
Everything about him is dead now
But for a non-physical entity
Lingering for a few moments
To look at two young girls in early teens
And their mother wailing miserably –
The image of an Arab woman
Weeping in the desert hangs in the air.
