Abstract: Particle accelerators are tools of discovery which has broad range of applications in basic and applied Sciences. While India has several national accelerator facilities in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata etc., North Eastern (NE) part of the country still does not have any particle accelerator.
So we are proposing to construct a state of the art Pelletron Accelerator with Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) as injector, which provides high current and robust stability and high energy of the ions. This will be done in collaboration with Universities and academic institutes of all states of the NE Region and India’s leading National Laboratories.
The facility will have several beam-lines and experimental stations dedicated for nuclear astrophysics studies in inverse kinematics, investigation of projectile breakup and Optical Model analysis around Coulomb barrier , neutron science and Swift Heavy Ion in Material (SHIM), Micro-Beam Line (MBL) for life sciences, archaeology and geological sciences.
In Phase-1, we propose to construct a Positive Ion Mass Spectroscopy (PIMS) facility for radio-carbon dating of archaeological samples of NE region. This will definitely fulfill the long-standing need of such a facility in the region for studies pertaining to prehistoric and historical archaeology, Quaternary geology, paleo-environment and paleo-climate by strengthening the absolute chronological framework in the last 50,000 years.
It may be noted that PIMS is a novel technology invented recently as an alternative to Accelerator Mass Spectroscopy (AMS) as a simple, cost effective and better sensitivity. In this presentation, the modus-operandi of the entire project, its progress along with various aspects of application to multiple disciplines will also be highlighted.
