Abstract: Plasma is considered to be the fourth state of matter, which is formed when dsome portion of a gas is ionized. In laboratories, the ionization of the gases for the production of plasma is achieved with the aid of electric fields. When plasma is formed at pressures close to atmospheric pressure, arc plasma, commonly known as thermal plasma, is formed.
Thermal plasma is characterized by high ion and neutral particles’ temperature, which is almost equal to electron temperature, leading to high enthalpy of the plasma. Such high enthalpy plasma has been utilized in various applications like plasma cutting, waste treatment, synthesis of nanoparticles etc.
This talk will touch upon the basics of plasma, with special emphasis on thermal plasma and production of thermal plasma in laboratories. It will also discuss synthesis of nanoparticles by thermal plasma using plasma expansion technique and control of nanoparticles size and hence their properties by variation in experimental parameters.
Application of thermal plasma in the field of fusion research, which is mimicking the plasma in the divertor region of Tokamaks, to study the plasma surface interaction which is likely to take place in divertor region of future tokamaks like ITER will also be discussed.
