Abstract
Fluctuations are ubiquitous in many natural and social systems. The nature of the fluctuations have important consequences on the evolution of these systems and characteristic quantities such as scaling exponents are used to understand the non-equilibrium behavior. The analysis of phenomena such as extreme events from data will be presented.
