Can We Align or Research to the Contemporary Social Expectations?
B.N. Jagatap
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai 400 085
India is perhaps facing some of the toughest challenges in the field of social and economic development. India is one of the largest economy in terms of GDP, however, in terms of per capita GDP her world rank is 164. Economic survey of 2014-15 shows that that the country has become services hub and not a centre for high end manufacture.
Generation of employment is also a matter immediate concern considering that India’s 65% population is below 35 years of age. India’s world ranking as per human development index is 135; the low rank speaks of the inaccessibility of her citizens to energy, drinking water, health care etc.
Interestingly all these issues fall in the realm of science and technology. We researchers can solve many of these problems provided we bring in a paradigm shift in our research endeavors. Today the country needs innovations, new technology, quality education and skill development among others, and all these can be fostered with appropriate research in basic sciences. In this talk we discuss these issues in details with examples from our work.
