An Embedded System is a combination of computer hardware and software, and perhaps additional mechanical or other parts, designed to perform a dedicated function. In some cases, embedded systems are part of a larger system or product. Presently Embedded System is invading almost all household instruments to modern war equipment. From automotive electronics to avionics Embedded System plays the vital role in their performance. A generic embedded system hardware comprises of a CPU with data and program memory, A/D & D/A converter, FPGA and ASIC components, required sensor and actuator interface, human interface, diagnostic and power management.
This hardware performs tasks according to the codes (program) stored in program memory. Microcontrollers are used as CPU. A microcontroller is a single silicon chip with memory and all Input/ Output peripherals on it. Hence a microcontroller is also popularly known as a single chip computer. On the basis of the instruction set microcontrollers are classified in two categories: CISC: Complex Instruction Set Computer and RISC: Reduced Instruction Set Computer. Depending on the complexity, some embedded systems require the aid of programmable logic devices like CPLDs and FPGAs. Standard communication interface is a necessary requirement of an Embedded System.
Real Time Operating System is another necessary requirement of an embedded system with real time multitasking facility. Embedded System also helps in scientific data collection, analysis and control.
