Questionable NGOs
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: January 18, 2014 -
Though India lacks adequate number of schools and healthcare centres for its one billion plus people, it is 'remarkably' abundant in NGOs working at different sectors.
According to some report, India is estimated to have more than 3.3 million NGOs, which is roughly one NGO for every 400 people.
The NGOs do play significant roles in the country, but not all of those 3.3 million NGOs.
In the recent years, many NGOs have been blacklisted by the Government mainly for financial irregularities.
They receive funds either from the Government agencies or international organizations and the funds are to be utilized strictly to achieve specific targets in social welfare and social development.
There are several praiseworthy NGOs working seriously for the people in different sectors of health, education, etc., while many other NGOs misappropriate funds only to hike their own personal exchequers.
This is the national scenario of NGOs, but the local scenario here could be even grimmer. As far as the NGOs in Manipur are concerned, the first and foremost thing they value is money.
Those specialized in preparing project details and lobbying people at the Ministries often turn out triumphant in their NGO business.
They won't bother if the funds sanctioned to them are misused or not. If one NGO is blacklisted or banned, then another will be set up.
Those NGO 'gurus' act as chameleons by changing and modifying their names. Their sole motive is to earn as much as they can in the name of people's welfare and development.
Recently, Hueiyen Lanpao has exposed one fake biomedical waste disposal plant at Samurou owned and managed by one registered NGO "Rural Multipurpose Development Organization (RMDO)".
The RMDO had duped several private hospitals and clinics by collecting money for disposal of biomedical wastes. The fake plant was ultimately shut down by Manipur Pollution Control Board.
That was just one example. Hundreds of such NGOs (fake or registered) might be looking for the opportune time and place to make money easily and dignifiedly.
Another NGO was also exposed by Hueiyen Lanpao just few days back for its unofficial association with an international organization.
The NGO in question admitted to its faults and dumped itself for the sake of saving some pre-planned event.
The readers of Hueiyen Lanpao can easily point out the 'drama' played by that NGO.
Even if the event goes smoothly, that NGO will definitely lose its credibility.
An 'organized scam' can be unearthed if the investigation agencies look deeper into the functioning of such NGOs.
Here, Manipur Police needs to have a separate cell for dealing with economic offences.
Crores of rupees have been looted from the people of Manipur through ponzi schemes by some companies few years back. But, there is no action so far.
In fact, Manipur Police is totally blank about such crimes though they are experts in infamous activities.
The operations of the NGOs in question should be monitored closely by other NGOs and civil society organizations in order to prevent the State from becoming the land of 'thieves and frauds'.
