Quake blow to women vendors - Sellers demand new site in 5 days
The Telegraph | Khelen Thokchom | Imphal, Jan 6
The earthquake that jolted Manipur on Monday spared Thangjam Memcha Devi's family members and home but left miseries in its wake. She is not the only one who has lost her livelihood. The earthquake has, for the time being, buried the businesses of about 2,300 vendors in the two markets - New Market and Laxmi Bazar.
Under strong pressure from the vendors, the Okram Ibobi Singh government has been working on providing an alternative site to them until the buildings are reopened. The government has sought 20 days to prepare the temporary site but the vendors have set a five-day deadline. "We can't wait for 20 days. What we will eat during the 20 days? We want to resume our business in five days' time," Shanti Devi, another vendor said.
