Preparing to take the challenges of life : Education after the school level
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: October 12 2015 -
Tata Institute of Social Science in Nagaland. This is after Guwahati.
Moreover there is also the Indian Institute of Technology at Guwahati and the Indian Institute of Management at Shillong.
Wonder where Manipur features on the map of education in the country.
Granted there is the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, which is supposed to be at the level of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and now there is a National Institute of Technology.
Moreover there is the Central Agriculture University (CAU) and other institutes offering technical courses.
Manipur University too has been upgraded to a Central University, but all these developments have not fittingly answered the question of whether these institutes have been able to meet the demands of the young students.
How about students who prefer to pursue general courses such a BA, BSc and BCom ?
Are there enough good, competent colleges to absorb the numerous students after they finish their Class 12 ? The reality should tell its own story.
Every year thousands of students from Manipur make a beeline for institutes based outside the State to pursue higher education.
For the well off parents this may not pose much of a problem but how about the others who find it difficult, but nevertheless do not want to compromise the future of their children ?
Has the Government given any thought to this ? More importantly have the people, meaning the numerous pressure groups, here given any thought to this ?
The price of education. Obviously very high and the unacceptable part is, there just does not seem to be a way out.
Everyone here is under the impression that the future of the youngsters can be played around with impunity.
The Government does not seem to give any thought to this either. This is the reason why students do not get to study or attend classes regularly.
In such a situation, the competitive spirit is dulled and this is something unacceptable in this age when competition is the by word.
Excellence, this is what the world is banking on and there is just no room for mediocrity.
As pointed out here in this column umpteen times, majority of the parents and guardians have no choice but to look beyond the State for the education of their children after the school level.
And education does not come cheap.
So parents and elders have to put aside a handsome amount for the academic pursuit of their children and this is something which could have been easily avoided if only some chance is given to the colleges to function normally.
The Centre may open competitive institutes here, but ultimately what matters is people’s approach to the understanding of education.
Just what is it that adults want for their children ?
A question which should have been raised years back.
