Pregnant Moments 2 (Fragments of a Poem)
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
I clean forgot a beautiful face
Till she gave me a fleeting smile.
It happened one day
About a month after my marriage;
I glanced briefly towards a lady
Shopping at the local bakery -
There was, alas, no sign of recognition.
Suddenly she turned and looked at me
With a big smile on her face;
All at once I got a terrible shock and recognised
The lady was none other than my wife
My newly married wife
And she was not bad looking.
The feelings of guilt and stupidity
Oh! I nearly died of embarrassment.
What an undefined forgetfulness!
I could feel my heart turned pale with shame.
Not only had we shared
A room and a teak bed,
But we had already shared
Some real moments of life
Like the moment she became a woman
And I a man
In the realistic drama of love set in the future.
I say, real moments of life,
But then, one day
In the early days of my married life
I clean forgot a beautiful face
Till she gave me a fleeting smile.
I wonder why I remember this moment
And also why I ponder about it.
If I do not know it is no big deal.
Life cracks many jokes
At my expense
And the moment pales into insignificance
Beside these terrible jokes.
Life!
A chain of insignificant moments?
Or a long and insignificant moment?
No sense at all.
There is no sense in pondering about it;
I know it does not make any sense
And is nothing but an isolated incident
That happened one day
In the adult life of a common man.
The less said about it the better -
Because I cannot, oh, I cannot
For the life of me
Bring it to life
Though I am cocksure
I am taking it to the grave.
Sing out, friend.
Praise be to the insignificant moment!
