GSCI Endorses the Peace Rally Called by Christian Communities in Manipur
Peace, Brotherhood and Harmony has been the Social Fabric of Manipur, It Must be Protected
Good Shepherd Church of India (GSCI) endorses the Peace Rally called by the Christian communities in Manipur in light of the recent communal violence in Patsoi, Imphal West. GSCI in Manipur will be joining the Peace Rally, scheduled to be held in Imphal, Manipur on June 6, 2015.
Manipur was once known for its relative peace and tranquility, but over the last four decades has transformed into one of the most violent and troubled state in India. The Church in Manipur has been especially concerned with the escalating violence among various communities; and seeks to promote peace and harmony. The GSCI as an expression of solidarity and support against victims of violence had in the past conducted all night prayers.
Bishop and the Deputy Moderator of Good Shepherd Church of India, Rt. Rev. Paothang Haokip, while addressing a gathering in Hyderabad, said, “Peace, brotherhood and harmony have been the hallmark of the social fabric of the different communities in Manipur since time immemorial - whose underlying principles has become increasingly threatened.”
In a letter to the committee of the Peace Rally, Bishop Paothang Haokip appealed to all sections of the society to work towards building peace and harmony in the state – saying that, “Growing intolerance of religious and ethnical differences will damage the image of Manipur’s integrity.”
