THE PAUL FOUNDATION
Courses of Study: Programmes leading up to a degree at any of the leading Universities, Institutes, Centers anywhere in the world, including India. Please note, short-term courses are not considered. Subjects: Humanities, Basic Sciences, Applied Sciences, Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Management, Law, Medicine. Any area of knowledge that extends the frontiers of understanding and scholarship.
ELIGIBILITY
- Applicants must have completed their graduation from a UGC recognised Indian University to be eligible for the scholarships.
- The scholarships are open to all Indian Citizens of either sex.
- Candidates must have a First Class degree from a UGC recognized University in India or a recognized university abroad.
- They must be resident in India at the time of application and if short-listed, applicant must appear in person for the interview.
- They must be below 30 years of age as on 1st November 2007.
- Prior admission / offered admission to an institution is absolutely necessary to be offered a scholarship.
- The institution concerned must be of top rank only.
NOTE: Candidates should have applied for admission to the University or Institution of their choice, at the time of submitting the application. Candidates must attach a copy of the application or applications, listing order of preference with the application to The Paul Foundation. The Selection Committee will consider only those candidates who have obtained admission at the time of interview.
ADVISORY: Candidates are advised to consult the relevant university prospectus before applying for a particular course. They are also advised not to submit their application unless all requirements have been fulfilled. Preference will be given to candidates who have not yet studied abroad. The foundation also encourages applications from young people who are currently employed. Scholarships will not be awarded to candidates whose proposed course of study or specific project requires fieldwork trips to India during their tenure. Scholarships for study overseas will not cover the cost of fieldwork trips to India for the duration of the scholarship.
SELECTION
The selection is made by an independent Selection Committee on the basis of written applications, followed by personal interviews. The criteria are:
Potential & Self Motivation: The candidate must show initiative and the capacity of making an impact in the subject of choice. Candidate must have the drive to transform ideas into reality and the ability to make full use of the opportunity provided by the Scholarship.
Achievement & Evidence of Initiative: The candidate must provide evidence of other interests in addition to academic achievements. The candidate should have played a prominent role (not necessarily related to the proposed course) in some field such as the Arts, Communication, Debating, Journalism, Social Work, Sports, Technology or Theatre.
SUITABILITY
Candidates will be required to explain the preference of studying at a foreign university for the proposed course. The candidate will be assessed on the value of the proposal and on the potential to make a positive contribution to society and to the country. 5
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Application forms must be duly completed and must be submitted by February 15, 2008 and must include:
- A two-thousand-word printed proposal, putting the subject in the context of the discipline in which the candidate is eager
to pursue higher studies. A three-hundred-word handwritten personal profile by the candidate, both to be duly attested by the Principal/Director/Dean/Head of Department/Supervisor. Please note that copies of Statements of Purpose should be attached to the application to The Paul Foundation. The proposal sent to The Paul Foundation shall not be a copy of the Statement of Purpose submitted as part of application procedure to a foreign university. Application so received will be automatically rejected.
- Two samples of written academic work, in addition, to the 2000 word printed proposal and a handwritten personal profile by the candidate. The samples may include course work, that is, essays. It could include relevant articles published in any journal, magazine, newspaper etc. All proposals and profiles must be certified by a minimum of two referees, that is, duly attested by the Principal/Director/Dean/Head of Department/Supervisor/lecturer/professor under whom he / she has studied for a minimum of one year.
- Candidate must submit copy of application, along with receipt/ acknowledgement, application for admission to a course of study in top ranked universities, institutes or centres, in India or overseas.
- Candidates in Architecture, Fine Arts, Applied Arts and other related subjects must submit twelve colour transparencies/CD of recent creative work, in a plastic folder, giving the size of the original, the material used and the date completed. These materials will not be returned. A letter certifying the candidate’s work duly attested by the Principal/Director/Dean/Head of Department/Supervisor must be attached.
- Candidates for Film, Dance and Acting must submit a video cassette (VHS) / CD, which will be returned. A letter certifying the candidate’s work duly attested by the Principal/Director/Dean/Head of Department/Supervisor must be attached.
- Candidates for Music must submit a cassette / CD which will not be returned. A letter certifying the candidate’s work duly attested by the Principal/Director/Dean/Head of Department/Supervisor must be attached.
- Two self-addressed stamped (Rs.5/-) envelopes (4" x 9") must be enclosed.
- Please attach the photocopy of the degree certificates, (10 + 2 + 3 +), duly attested by the Principal/Director/Dean/Head of Department/ Supervisor.
- Attach the income certificates of family members, self (if applicable), duly attested by a Class I Gazetted Officer or Charted Accountant.
- Annual Income in case of retired person, pension or other incomes must be stated.
- Estimate of funds required in Indian Rupees. State separately cost of tuition + travel + living expenses.
- Please attach two photocopies of the completed application form pages 1 to 4 inclusive on separate sheets. Tick the check boxes. Do not photocopy pages 5 & 6.
The final interviews will take place in June-July 2008 for candidates taking up places in Aug/Sep 2008. All applicants must be available for interviews in India. Candidates who do not receive any communication by May 15, 2008 must assume that their application has been unsuccessful.
Application form will not be sent by post after February 1, 2008.
