Pandey, Pandey all the way : MU crisis not over yet
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: September 24 2018 -
It has been MU, MU all the way for some time now.
Or rather it has been Pandey, Pandey all the way with some even coining comical phrases in Meiteilon all related to the word pandey, literally changing the name or surname of a person to a verb.
The man central to the MU uproar has been placed under suspension but he has made it sure that he continues to haunt the university and the midnight raid at MU on September 21 aptly sums up the man who the MU community have been targeting for months.
Not quite fits in with the phrase, ‘not giving up without a fight’ but it is more than clear that even when the world is stacked up against him, AP Pandey will strike.
Whether the strike is below the belt or not is best left to the people to judge, but the midnight raid at MU may not be the last parting shot of the man from Varanasi and this is where it becomes interesting to speculate what he may have up his sleeves.
And it goes without saying that he would not have had the gumption to fight back so strongly if he did not have political backings and this is a point which must have worried Chief Minister N Biren no end.
The important question is, will the MU fiasco have an impact on how the voters vote when Parliamentary elections come especially in the Inner Parliamentary Constituency ?
Public memory is short, no doubt about it and this is what the BJP led Government here will be banking on but remember there are others, notably the Congress, which will leave nothing to chance to rake up the MU issue when election time comes.
Tough to say how effective this will be but in all likelihood the students and teachers of MU will not forget the stormy days of 2018 when 2019 comes.
The interesting question now is, where is AP Pandey at the moment ?
Is he still here in Imphal or has he left ?
No definite answer here but it is a wonder that a man, an individual could be so important that a university can be brought to a complete halt for over 90 days.
Again it is also tough to even imagine that on account of one individual the campus of a university can be raided so non-chalantly in the dead of the night.
The BJP will surely need to go in for some image refurbishing exercise and the sooner this is done the better it would be for the party.
A new VC-in charge has assumed office but it is unlikely that the teaching faculty and the students of MU will extend co-operation to him and the natural question that arises is, can the varsity function under such a cloud of animosity ?
Everyone seems to be calling out for normalcy to return to MU, but normalcy cannot be achieved if all stick to their stand point, refusing to budge a bit and see if a compromise solution can be worked out.
This is a point which should go down with all those who are directly involved in the MU crisis.
For starters the Government may step in and get all those arrested released without any pre-condition.
Arresting teachers of MU and students at this point of time can be the antidote to working out a solution to the issue at hand.
This is a point which the Government should not overlook. Not the right way to demonstrate that the Government is here to act and set things right.
