FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
5th May 2010.
Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) is once again constrained to come out with this press note in view of the continued attempts by the Government of Manipur and certain section of the civil society to suppress basic rights of people living within the state of Manipur. The Cabinet’s decision supported by some organizations to ban the entry of Mr. Th. Muivah is yet another evidence of this.
We firmly believe it is upon the Nagas to welcome him and this decision is informed by our desire for peace and harmony and not as put by the GoM and some organizations. The Nagas have no other alternative but to conclude that the Government of Manipur is not a government that safeguards peace and harmony but one that promotes intolerance and violence.
We would also like to appeal to all concerned not to give in to the divisive agenda of the state. The history of Manipur is wrought with the quest for self-determination by different peoples of the state; respecting and supporting each other in this quest is in the best interest of everyone.
We would also like to remind each one of us, the experience of militarization which has devastated communities; we ask if it is right to support militarization of Naga areas when we are collectively against militarization especially Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
It is in this spirit that we appeal to all Nagas as well as other communities to uphold the principles and values of peace and harmony.
