Subject: Peace Rally on the 11th May 2010
Respected Sir/Madam,
Greetings!
As you are aware of the proposed visit of Mr. Thuingaleng Muivah, leader of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (IM), to his native village in Manipur, and the subsequent decision of the Government of Manipur to bar his entry to the state, has led to a sharp escalation of tensions between the Naga and Meitei communities living in the states of Manipur and Nagaland, as well as other areas of the North East of India.
These incidents have exacerbated, the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the state of Manipur as the peoples of Manipur are facing acute shortage of food, fuel and critical medical supplies, resulting in a skyrocketing price.
In a view to appeal the Prime Minister of India for his urgent intervention for bringing an immediate end to this crisis, the Greater Guwahati Manipuri Association organized a Peace Rally on 11th May 2010.
We would appreciate if you could kindly give coverage of the Peace Appeal of the organizers through your esteemed print/electronic media. We attached herewith the Memorandum to the Honorable Prime Minister of India and a Press Release for your perusal.
Thank you in anticipation of your kind support.
Yours faithfully,
Secretary,
M. Pradip Kr. Singha

Press Release
Date: the 11th May 2010, Guwahati
The Greater Guwahati Manipuri Association (GGMA) express grave concerns over humanitarian crisis unfolding in the state of Manipur as a result of brewing tensions in the states of Manipur, Nagaland and areas bordering with Assam. The tension that has grown on the proposed visit of Mr. Thuingaleng Muivah, leader of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (IM), to his native village in Manipur, and the subsequent decision of the Government of Manipur to bar his entry to the state, has led to a sharp escalation of tensions between Naga and Meitei communities living in the states of Manipur and Nagaland, as well as other areas of North East of India. The proposed visit has already resulted in a violent incident at Mao Gate, the border between Manipur and Nagaland, which claimed the lives of two young persons and caused grievous injuries to several others. Thousands of people, belonging to both communities are currently living in deep insecurity and it has reported that many have already relocated to safer locations suffering the ignominy of the displaced.
GGMA shows deep concern over the situation of total road blockade on the Assam-Manipur border (along High Way 53) and Assam- Nagaland border (National High Way 39), enforced from the 5th of May 2010, by many Naga civil societies, resulting an acute shortage of essential commodities including fuel, oxygen, critical life-saving drugs and equipment. Adding to the woes of the people, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has declared that routine operations would be suspended from the 11th of May, 2010 because of the scarcity of oxygen.
In these circumstances, the GGMA organised a Peace Rally to appeal the Prime Minister of India for his urgent intervention to bring an immediate end to ongoing crisis in Manipur. The Peace Rally started from the Rajbari Athletic Club play ground, Manipuri Basti and submitted a Memorandum to the Honourable Prime Minister of India through the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro), Assam. The copy of the Memorandum was also submitted to the Honourable Chief Minister of Nagaland, the Honourable Chief Minister of Manipur and the Honourable Home Minister, the Government of India.
GGMA express that any further delay in working out a solution can only deepen the distress of people and may precipitate processes with very unfortunate consequences and thus appealed the Prime Minister to intervene urgently and bring an immediate end to this crisis.
GGMA appeal the Prime minister to bring a swift end to the problems being encountered, through the restoration of communications to and from the state and ensuring a free flow of all essential commodities including food, fuel and critical medical supplies, safe and secure movement of all people along all routes.
GGMA condemn all forms of violence and appeal to all concerned to maintain composure and ensure that the lives and property of all people are protected. It is our strong belief that the current imbroglio can only be resolved through dialogue in an environment of peace and harmony.
