New Delhi: 1 March, 2011 As the second session of the Preparatory Committee for the United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT PrepCom) started at the United Nations Head Quarters in New York from 28 February and will go on to 4 March 2011.
To coincide with this, on 2 March 2011, Control Arms Foundation of India will also be organizing a parallel Round Table Discussion to assess India’s current policy position on the ongoing United Nations process on the Arms Trade Treaty. The discussion will be held at Conference Room, Control Arms Foundation of India.
The Round Table Discussion will look into the various issues of armament, disarmament and non-proliferation efforts that have held the attention of the world and India. Control Arms Foundation of India has been urging the Government of India to become a signatory to the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty Process. With 2000 people dying every day from armed violence, member states have agreed to begin negotiations. Civil society has an important role to play in the process towards an Arms Trade Treaty. Several experts, journalists, lawyers, woman rights groups and activists will be participating at this Round Table Discussion.
