Post Mark - one of the pioneer metal bands of India is being
remembered by fans. In late 80's and early 90's, when singing cover
songs were popular in India, and when audience were not ready to
appreciate original music, in a country where pop songs(leave alone
hard rock) were not even heard by a large audience, Post Mark wrote
their original songs and released an album 'Stamp on you', in 1989,
perhaps India’s first classic-thrash-metal/ old-school-metal album.
They did not sacrifice their love for the metal genre and their
craving for originality in their sound.
One of the last shows performed by Post Mark was in 1996 in Mumbai
after which the band lay dormant. In 1999, the untimely demise of front man and vocalist Abungcha Kshetrimayum in an automobile accident dealt a blow to the band from which recovery would not be easy as is obvious from their silence for almost two decades.", should have been "In 1999, the untimely demise of front man and vocalist Abungcha Kshetrimayum in an automobile accident dealt a blow to the band from which recovery would not be easy as is obvious from their silence for almost a decade.
Of late, since the news of Metallica, perhaps the biggest metal band
in the world, coming to India broke; metal fans all over the country
have been waiting eagerly for their October concerts in Delhi and
Bangalore. But the heavy metal fans and enthusiasts of Manipur cannot
forget their heroes Post Mark – the band who introduced an entire
generation of Manipur to the heavier side of music. They cannot forget
the hardships bore by Post Mark of being the pioneers and paved the
way for all for them. Fans of Post Mark from all over the globe pooled
in money through a group called Rock Music Manipur(RMM) – a mailing
list and POSTMARK fans group in Facebook, to make Post Mark attend the
concert of Metallica.
Today morning Post Mark band members have reached Bangalore, for
tomorrow's Metallica gig at Palace Grounds, Bangalore.
Their fans called out to them, to honour them; and now the remaining
band members meet again under the familiar roof of music. Whether they
will reunite or form a new group, the fans sleep well tonight with the
assurance that the icons of heavy metal in Manipur and North East
India are jamming together again. Even though they did not acquire
success, as the world knows it in measures of fame and riches, they
achieved their goal by leaving an indelible stamp in the minds and
hearts of their fans.
