On Re-reading the Ramayana
K. Radhakumar *
Morning wakes to a dull sunrise
And today is not a new day.
Yesterday was not a good day.
I am pretty sure tomorrow will not be different.
Maybe I am sick,
Maybe I am not.
Anxiety seems to be the order of the day.
Dirty things
Ugly things
More and more dirty things
More and more ugly things.
Newspapers report of a diseased civilization
Or a newspaper is the product of
A diseased civilization.
The sword of Damocles is still hanging
Above everyone's head.
One suffers not because one has done wrongs
One suffers for what one has not done:
The colour of one's eyes,
Difference of one's native tongue
From the other tribes.
Who wants nuclear winter?
Nobody.
At least everybody says no.
A dark shape looms up ahead of us.
What is all this noise?
Ram has not effectively killed off
The ten-headed Ravan
And now there is no Valmiki
To re-write the Ramayana.
