On Hearing the Music of Conches Blowing
K. Padmakumar *
On hearing the music of conches blowing
Just before dawn
My mind is flushed with excitement!
And my heart is beating its wings!
Before I can just feel the direction
The music is coming from
A winged thought
Brings back my love
Who had gone her separate ways
Long, long ago
And my inner self is deeply disturbed.
The sweet music of conches
The lovely stray thought
The moment that's lovely and warm
Ah, all have imbalanced my mind!
Outside will be better
So feels my not so brave soul.
Outside, the dawn stands with icy calm
And sheds dewdrops,
There I get stuck with a heavy heart.
My heart goes out to you mother,
Fated to suffer!
How you withstood the pangs of love for Krishna
The common people took you for a person of loose morals,
Not knowing how love could be consummated.
Mother, thou daughter of Brishbhanu!
My love's pain sings around me
And this compared to yours
I daresay is a drop in the ocean.
