OBITUARY
It is with extreme anguish that we came to know about the sad demise of Sh Devadas JV Raja, lovingly called Oja Raja by all his students and fellow teachers alike. Oja Raja passed away on Sunday, 12 January, 2014 due to kidney failure at his home in Pondicherry. He was 59 and survived by his wife and two loving daughters.
Oja Raja was born on March 8, 1955 and studied in St Ann’s High School Tindivanam and Sacred Heart College, Tirupatur. Not long after passing out from college in 1977, he came to Manipur to join as a teacher of Mathematics at Don Bosco High School, Imphal. During the 80’s and early part of the 90’s Don Bosco Imphal was among the best schools in Manipur and regularly featured among the rank holders at the HSLC/Class X Board exams. It was because of highly motivated and dedicated teachers like Oja Raja who made seeming mundane and difficult things like Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus etc very interesting with his innovative style of teaching.
His enthusiasm, not only in teaching, but also in taking the lead in organizing a wide variety of co-curricular activities made him very popular among the students, whose lives he touched and whose career he shaped. Even though he was from the South, which has distinct cultural and linguistic difference from Manipur, he became an integral part of Manipur, his adopted home. He could speak fluent Manipuri and even married a lady from Manipur, Smt Rita Golmei.
Oja Raja went back to Pondicherry in 1990 and was working in various organisations, however he kept in touch with the Don Bosco institutes, be it working for the street children of Pondicherry or at BOSCONET in Delhi, Chennai or Pondicherry till the time of his death.
In this hour of grief, the Alumni of Don Bosco Imphal express deep sympathy and condolence towards the bereaved family. We pray to the almighty that the departed soul may be granted eternal peace in heaven and the family the strength to carry on.
